Hi all,
I'm looking to upgrade computer in the near future

my current specs are:
cpu - fx 4100
motherboard - asus m5a78l
graphics card - pallit gtx 650 ti boost
ram : 8gb ddr3 1333mhz

and my upgrade will be:
cpu - fx 8350
motherboard - ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0
Graphics card - sapphire r9 280x 3gb

does this sound good? ill be keeping my ram from my previous computer, also i can get the gpu for £150 slightly used, its a big saving so will it be safe to do so? otherwise i will have to get a basic r9 280

Yes, however since your updating your CPU AND MOBO, Get a intel core i5 4460 and a H97 or Z97 Motherboard.

Upgrading to a dead socket and also a CPU that is getting old isn't worth it. (There are exceptions, like if you game and stream at the same time and you need a cpu to do this for under $200.)

I know what you are getting at but.......... do you realize the 1150 socket isn't getting any more upgrades either?

unfortunately the i5 is out of my budget, I did look at an i5 but its around £80 more when taking in the price of the cpu and motherboard.

Uh, you might want to look that up, because the 5th generation core I series cpus code named Broadwell is 100% supported to go into H97 and Z97 lga 1150 motherboards. (when they come out, all the mobos will probably need is a BIOS update.)

my current specs are:
CPU - AMD FX-4100 @ 4.1 ghz
RAM - 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)
MB - ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M LX V2 (AM3R2)
GPU - 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST (Palit Microsystems)
Storage - 931GB Seagate ST31000528AS ATA Device (SATA)
PSU - corsair cx500m

and looking at spending £200 on cpu/mobo and £200 on gpu. What do you think on a 2nd hand card? the 280x is £150 and still has 1.5yrs warranty. And im in the UK

Where are you purchasing the second hand card? If it still has 1.5 years of warranty it should be fine.
