4790k temp problems

So i just got the 4790k last week. Got to oc'ing (4.6) and monitoring temps today, and with my h100i the temps sit around 65 for the first 20 or so minutes and then just randomly shoot up to 100. I already reapplied the thermal paste and made sure the cooler was seated right but still happening the same way every time. This is with monitoring with realtemp, coretemp, and msi afterburner. Did i get a bad processor? I could still exchange it with microcenter.

have you tried lowering voltage usually voltage adds alot of heat.

That isn't normal, how is the h100is fans? The tubes aren't' leaking either right.

I agree with Iceclock. Also make sure that Adaptive Voltages are off. With Prime95, it gets more and more intensive, so the motherboard might turn up the voltage, which will raise your temps a lot.

also remember if u use automatic overclocking profiles they will have automatic voltage settings and might be higher than recommand thats why manually overclocks are always best

so i reset all my bios to default and primed it, it turbos to 4.4 and after about 16 mins it jumps to 90C.

That doesn't sound good at all. Replace the thermal paste and try again. Make sure no dust is there.

already did that. took the cooler off cleaned it and cpu and reapplied new paste. is there a chance i got a bad cpu?

The 4790K should have fixed it. What is your voltage when it goes that high?

ok it goes up to 1.239 around the time the temp spikes.

That is actually VERY low for that frequency. My 4770K needs 1.45 for 4.6 (It's an issue, I can easily start at 1.275) but that is SUPER low. That may just be a bad 4790k. Is the H100i showing up in Corsair Link and is it working?

That means it probably isn't working correctly. Make sure to plug it in with the Corsair Link connector FIRMLY.

Sounds like poor coolant flow to me.

Do you have any kinks in the H100i tubing?

Does the Corsair Link program show good pump speed? Even if it does, the problem could still be a bad pump.

apparently i didnt have the link connector properly connected but even that didnt make a difference. corsair link shows my h100i but the temp still jumps to 90 after 16 minutes. i even maxed out the fans and it only made about a 2 degrees difference.

theres something ur not doing right.

if it continues id consider rma the processor shouldnt get this hot with a 100i or trying with a different cooler if u get different temps

Ok so an interesting new development. Put on both h80I and frio and same thing with both. Then I hooked my friends computer and it did the same thing! Heres his hugh temps after 18 mins. 85c 87c 86c 83c. Is there a chance I have bad thermal paste? Its like 4 years old. Its antec formala 6. I took out my mobo and think that was a waste of time because now that I see my friends computer doing the same thing im just baffled

Well, that generally isn't bad. I would buy new thermal paste and try that.

If it is old, it could be, but I highly doubt it. You can get some new paste and try that.

You could have a bad board, ASUS boards generally aren't bad, but they don't perform the best. You know what? Try this: http://www.aida64.com/downloads/aida64extreme450zip Open that and go to one of the menus on top (on my mac right now, can't open it) and then press stability test. Then Stress FPU. Tell me if you get the same issue. For more real world, stress CPU, FPU, cache, and memory. That is what gaming would likely do. For compressing and rendering simulation, Stress FPU, cache, and memory.

i dont get what i'm supposed to be getting from aida. i start it then immediately get a stability test: failed. doesnt seem to be stressing anything much my temps arent going higher than 56, but are mostly sitting in the low 30s.
