Devil's Canyon on ASUS Maximus VI Formula using USB Bios Flashback

Hi everyone. I'm a bit of a novice so please bear with me. So my situation is that I have the Maximus VI Formula board which is Z87 but I also have the 4790k. I understand that all I need to do is update the bios, however the only way I could do that is either through usb bios flashback without using a CPU, or buying a cheap CPU to simply update the bios then plop the 4790k back in. I really don't want to have to buy another CPU, so my question is... is it possible to do the bios update via usb flashback? I figured it would work, until I read on ASUS's website that they suggest using their specific bios updater tool to do the task. Now I am a bit unsure. Would just like clarity before I try the usb flashback. Thanks.

I am aware of how to use USB bios flashback I am just not sure if that will work since Asus seems to have a special bios updater just for the devils canyon CPUs that I can't use.

I am sorry to dig this back, but I am now in the same situation. What was the cheap cpu you bought to do this work? Can't we just use Flashback for proper bios update too?

Hey, what i ended up doing was finding the cheapest cpu possible to update the bios then i put the devils canyon cpu in. I know it kinda sucks, but its just the way it is. Im pretty sure the usb bios update doesnt work with this particular bios update.

So you did try the usb flashback, but no luck? I just did mine too following the instruction of pressing it for a few seconds till light flashing. No chance to test yet cz my cpu doesn't arrive yet.

Anyway, what was the cheapest cpu you used? The system is stable now?

My board is Maximus VI Hero

Hey the cpu I used was the Intel Celeron G1840. I judt didnt do the usb bios flash cause I wasnt 100% sure on it and didnt want to ruin everything. So after I used the cheap cpu and did the update using specific asus software on their site, I put the 4790k in and I have had no problems at all. Works great.

I ended up getting 4770K for hassle free. In worth case scenario, you can always get a cheaper cpu like G1820 for about $35 to install the Windows and update from there.

Yes, it worked u just need to plug in the motherboard to the power source and flash with the USB. You have to use Asus rename tool. It wont work if you just rename it yourself.
