hey everyone! So i am on my first (pricey) build -- ive build a many pc's in my time -- but none of which are at this cost and for myself.

Here is the build: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/ebaydan777/saved/L7zkcf

With that being said, I was stoked that the new Haswell Refresh i7-4790K chip came out and was ready to splurge on it as I am just waiting for a new z97 ROG Asus board to come out, and now I see the new Haswell - E coming out.

And I already know Devils Canyon will be out probably early 2015...am I screwing myself with getting the 4790K now, or should I wait for the E. And can you even overclock the Refresh chips??

Also when Devil's Canyon or Broadwell come out, can I simply swap the CPU out (hopefully mobo will work with it) without formatting HDD's?

Haswell-E will not be compatible with socket 1150, instead it will be for socket 2011 (LGA 2011-3). You're not "screwing" yourself over if you purchase the Haswell Refresh. Haswell-E is expected/estimated to cost around $999 USD too, so it's not what we'd exactly call on the affordable side; of course you're free to spend that much if you desire.

From the PCPartPicker list you have provided, you've selected a Z87 motherboard. As you mentioned in your original post however, I would wait for the Z97 motherboard. The Z97 will be compatible with Devil's Canyon and the next generation of Intel processors, titled Broadwell (5th generation). The Z87 however may not be compatible.

Devil's Canyon is expected to be released soon (ETA: mid-2014) and Broadwell to be released towards the end of this year, or beginning of 2015. You can actually purchase certain Devil's Canyon CPUs now. With all the said, if you purchase a Z97 motherboard, yes you can simply replace the CPU and you're good to go. You won't need to reinstall Windows or replace your motherboard.

All the best. :)

The 4790K is Devil's Canyon. It should be released soon.

It is a -K chip, meaning it can be overclocked.

Broadwell is supposed to be compatible with Z97 motherboards, im not sure about Z87 like the Maximus VI.

Haswell E is likely going to be on the LGA 2011 socket, but at this point information is scarce.
