I'm tasked with finding a new shared Printer/Fax/Copy/Scanner for the small business I work at.

Our requirements for the machine are as follows:

  • *Good for printing at least 2,500 pages per month (documents and spreadsheets, no images)

    *Monochrome

*At least a 40 Page Per Minute Print Speed

*Solid Manufacture Customer Service with expedient On Site Service.

*Absolute ceiling of $5000 for the machine and incidentals.

We want to pay for the machine upfront. No leasing.

But for technical and on site support, we'd be open to signing up for some sort of contract for up to 3 years if it's reasonable.

We've had a Canon IR3320i for 10 years and which is now on it's last legs.

Mechanical problems aside, we were pretty happy with it and the support Canon provided us.

We asked Canon to send us a proposal for a new machine.

They've suggested the IR 400f.

It looks decent on paper, but I can't find any reviews for it.

I've also been looking the Dell B3465 because I have found reviews for it, and they were mostly positive.

But we have no experience with Dell Tech Support and when I called their line to find out more about their On Site Services (about $500 for 3 years), they left me on hold for at least 10 minutes before I gave up, so that didn't leave a great impression on me.

I'd love for some input on these two printers, as well as suggestions for any other models that we should consider.

$5000 seems like an incredibly high number for one of those machines nowadays. Maybe that was an appropriate price 10 years ago, but 2,500 pages is a relatively small amount and can be done by a much cheaper and cost-effective unit.

Have a look at this, it has good reviews, features Fax/Copier/Printer/Scanner, and comes with a full Lexmark warranty. It also features good reviews and comes in at only a $1300 price point.

Hmm. It looks exactly like the Dell I was talking about. They share the same ODM I'm guessing?

Being able to call someone to come in to fix the machine within a 12 hour window is something that are really keen on having though since the printer will be pretty integral to our operations. With the Lexmark, that's not really an option I think.

There are 3rd party printer service providers in my region (Los Angeles), but I think we'd prefer to use them as a fallback choice after OEM on site service.

Not being from your area, I think it would be best for you to contact the various printer suppliers (HP, Dell, Canon, etc) and inquire about the on-site servicing options that they have available in the LA area. You said you had a Canon in the past, and if you were happy with their service, and believe the price of their new unit to be of a fair price, I would suggest you stick with them. Sometimes it's good to be loyal to a company that has served you well (especially for 10 years).

Good luck.
