My case's front panel audio died on me so I had to get a replacement from eBay. Unfortunately, the replacement was not HD audio. The front panel audio that came with my case was HD but I never used the HD cable, only the AC97 (stupid, i know. I wasn't aware that I even had the HD connector because this PC was my first build.) So I figured that even if the replacement wasn't HD it would be fine since the AC97 cables from my case worked anyway. But they don't... Can you guys help me? I have the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers from my mobo site and only the rear output works. The speakers I have plugged in the back make noise but the front panel doesn't. I also tried the "Disable front panel detection" in the Realtek HD Audio Manager but same thing, no sound. I even tried the option where it plays two audio streams simultaneously but nothing. I am positive that the connection to the mobo is secure. I double checked. The USB ports of the front panel audio replacement works so I assume that it is not DOA. Anyways, thanks guys for the help. I will be waiting for a reply. I waited a week for the replacement so it is kind of disappointing to see it not work like this.

Why can't you just RMA the piece you got and get the HD audio version...

The MB header supports both AC97 and HD audio. If it was working with the old front panel in AC97 audio mode, it should continue to work with the replacement front panel. Have you tried uninstalling the driver for the audio and rebooting... let Win7 try to find a driver for it?

When you say the old FP died, what do you mean? If the sound failed on the FP, it may be that the header is dead.

I have tried uninstalling and rebooting but I reinstalled the Realtek driver. I have not tried letting Windows 8 find the drivers for me. The sound failed on my old front panel audio but it was not related to the header. I can confirm that the header is alive and well because on my old FP the sound chip was the one at fault. If you squeezed the chip, the sound would work again but only when squeezed. Thank you for your reply. Pls continue to help me troubleshoot :'(
I miss the ability to use my earphones lol.

I meant on the front panel. You know where the jacks and USB are. If you squeeze the jack the sound would work again. I took off the front panel and unscrewed the front panel audio and I tried troubleshooting it and squeezing the green audio jack made sound work again. But only when squeezed. If you let go the sound would die again.

Seems like simply replacing the jack would have been simpler in that case.

That must be an old case to only have AC97 audio. How did letting Windows provide default audio work out?

Can you guide me through replacing the jack? I still have my old front panel audio that came with the case. How would I go about taking the green audio jack from the replacement and installing it onto the old one.
EDIT: What I don't understand is that although I was using AC97 audio, jack sensing was working for the front panel. I can confirm this because when I checked the mobo, the AC97 audio was plugged into the header as opposed to the blue HD audio connector.

Oh, I thought you replaced the whole front panel of your case. You meant you just replaced the front jack assembly. Once you plug in the HD Audio connector into the FP audio header, Realteck may recognize it automatically. If not, simply re-run the driver installation pgm for it. Or re-boot and see if Win8 will load it's own driver.

If that fails, uninstall the Realteck driver, reboot, and see if Win8 automatically loads its driver. If not, run the (win8 version) of the Realtek driver again.

That is my problem though. The replacement connector is not HD Audio, only AC97. My previous audio connector DID have HD audio but I never used it. I've been using AC97 all this time.

HD Audio and AC97 use the same header/same wiring. AC97 is simply missing some signals that HD Audio has.

Did you follow the above advice?

I did follow that advice but the front panel audio still does not work. I have tried getting win 8 to load its own driver. The driver loads but I still get no sound from the front, only the rear. The same result with the Realtek drivers from the motherboard site.

Then the only thing I can think of is that the old FP unit somehow damaged the header output when it was causing issues. Either that or your replacement is no good.
If you still have your old FP unit, plug it back in and 'squeeze' it or whatever you do to make it work and see if you get sound.

I got the case off Amazon. Can I even RMA? I didn't want to deal with the hassle of RMA either.
