Last week, I decided to purchase a 270x or 7950. I've managed to gather some more extra cash, and now the r9 280(non x) seems to be affordable.

I've come to the conclusion of buying either an r9 280, or a 7950. What has me worried is my power supply. Reading off the website i bought my psu, I have a 600w Standard 80 Plus Certified Power Supply. I really want to buy this 280, but if it's my psu that's holding me back, will it still work with a 7950?

Your GPU is just fine with 600 Watts of Power. According to this:

The card draws 257 Watts of power, and I am assuming your CPU wouldn't be drawing the remaining 343 Watts of power there...

You'll be just fine with the 280. Go ahead and treat yourself. You deserve it ;)

Depends on the quality of the power supply.

A Radeon R9-280 needs 30amps on the 12v rail and a 550 watt power supply , what PSU do you have.

Yes, it does. As long as it is good quality and has a good history, I am pretty confident that you would be able to run that card easily without issues.

It's the quality and the strength of the rail , history doesn't mean anything , what power supply do you have?

I'm not sure why the "reply" isn't working. But my power supply is: 600w Standard 80 Plus Certified Power Supply

That's all the sheet of paper says with all my computer specifications on it.

I need a make and model 80 plus doesn't have anything to do with performance.

Don't trust a power supply from a prebuilt that is where they skimp to save money.

If you want more powerful cards upgrade your power supply.

I've actually had this power supply for a good month now, so there's not turning back haha. Would you suggest me to somehow sell my current one and buy another psu? Or is it not worth it.

I wouldn't sell it , but id stick to the 7950 for now but that's up to you , an underpowered power supply can cause instability in your system.

I mean the reviews and history of it's length and lifetime.

Has no reviews , he doesn't no the make and model , putting a card in that it can't handle will cause issues.99% of prebuilts have poor power supplies to increase their profit margins.

I mean for any non-OEM PSU.

What would be some effects of the instability? Would the screen flicker, lower fps, or anything? I'm buying my gpu from a local store, so i can always return it if it's unstable and buy the 7950

Any of that , or it could completely fail , if it's real bad and ruin other components.

Artifacts, bad stuttering and low GPU voltage, and possibly causing damage to your card if it fails.

Seventeam makes their own power supplies and they aren't very good.

Looks like that will deliver enough power, it is just a question of how long it will last.

So if you are trying to say it's not a good idea to go with the 280, would it be okay with the 7950?

Here's the truth: Spec wise with 45 amps on the 12v rail it should be able to run it , but the quality is poor.

I recommend you don't but that's your choice.

I mean they are essentially the same card, but the 280 is overclocked more and has better cooling on most cards (newer aftermarket solutions).

It's the poor quality I'm worried about those power supplies don't even produce enough to meet the labeled specs.

I see. As Andrew said, I realize that the 7950 is basically close to the same as the 280, but is the difference in terms of power consumption or wattage significant enough for me to abandon the 280?

I wouldn't risk it but that's up to you , I've been at this a long time and if you ask others around here they will tell you I know what I'm talking about.

I guess I'll take the safe road and go with a lower end gpu. With my current psu, what gpu would be best that you can recommend?

That's up to you just be careful about your choice till you upgrade the supply.

I would get a new supply then upgrade that way you have your choice.

I would say the R9 280, but since you don't want to risk it, the R9 270X sells for $170-$200. There is the 7950, too.

I'll try the 280 for 3 days(let me know if that's too little). If i notice artifacting or any problems, I'll return it. If that's not the case then I'll keep it. Does that sound like a good plan?

Thanks for the help guys.
