Id go for the 290x if you can afford it. Im a believer you should buy as much horsepower as you can afford and the 290x is a faster card. It will generate more heat but if you have a good case with proper air flow it shouldnt be a real problem. A 290x will be faster and perform better and last you longer because the better the card you buy now, the longer itll be before youll need to upgrade usually.
What is your budget, resolution, and rest of the system?
The 290X performs better than the 780, but the 780ti beats the 290X. And the 780 can beat a 290 sometimes, but the other way around is true.
As for manufacturers, ASUS,MSI,Sapphire, EVGA.
If you want to save a little money go for the R9 290, it's almost as powerful as the R9 290X, both of them are a little better than the GTX 780 in most games although they run hotter and use more power. Most people prefer Nvidia drivers as well, but really AMD's are not that bad anymore. The Sapphire Tri-X OC is a great R9 290 and it's only like $379 right now on Newegg.

Honestly, I have no idea what my resolution is, this build is my first and I don't think I will be going too crazy with 4K monitors.
