ok, it's a fact that thermal paste is absolutely necessary whether it came pre-applied in a new processor or bought to be applied on aftermarket hsf.

it's my first time buying used processor and the package includes the stock hsf. according to my research, this processor have thermal paste already applied on its hsf. the thing is i'm not sure if it's there or not? i have no idea what it looks like. also, i'm thinking since this is used, the fan was dismantled and so the connection of hsf to the chip is "broken". does it mean the paste have been gone? does this mean i have to buy a thermal paste to apply to it on installation?

if so, is purchasing thermal paste comes with "compatibility" too or differs only in quality?

Solution

Look at the thermal paste. Has it been used? It should be neatly placed, not squished in certain parts. It probably is, but there is some good thermal paste out there like Antec Formula 7.

wait, when you say "stock", the hsf itself? sorry i'm confused. the package did not come with a "tube-paste thingy". so i'm assuming, the hsf has something on it already? or am i wrong?

It does. The stock cooler that comes with the processor already has thermal compound on it.

Apologies, I guess I should have clarified that but yes Andrew is correct. Even if you opted to buy an after market cooler those will most always have thermal compound on them as well.

i'm sorry if i am quite slow-witted but i just wanted to make sure. uhh, i want to reiterate that this is a second-hand processor. so is the compound most likely still intact? thank you for your very quick responses, appreciated it so much.

No worries..you should clean it off even if there is thermal paste still on it. You'll be able to tell pretty easily as you'll notice silver residue ontop the the cpu lid (metal casing that has the serial # etc).
