I want to upgrade my Socket 775 Core 2 Duo to a Socket 771 Xeon.

I am waiting on building a new PC, and I saw there was a little trick to make a 771 Xeon fit into a 775 socket. I currently have an E7200 with 4GB of DDR2 RAM (I think it is only 667 mhz, will need to check when I get home to confirm). I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-S3G motherboard (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2729#ov)

I am looking into getting something like:
E5450 (http://ark.intel.com/products/33083/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5450-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)
or an X5460 (http://ark.intel.com/products/33087/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5460-12M-Cache-3_16-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)

The largest difference that I have noticed with these CPUs is the max TDP is the E5450 is 80W and the X5460 is 120W. I would obviously rather have the 80W for power consumption, but is there any real difference between these? It looks like my motherboard will support both of them from what I can tell. Would one be able to be OC'd more than the other? And is there anything else that I would need to look for.

I know I am not going to get the best PC ever, but I believe this will be a significant enough upgrade to give the PC a good upgrade and allow me to hold off on a computer, especially if I coupled the upgrade with a Radeon 7770 or 7850 or such.

Thanks guys

You cannot overclock a xeon, but if you say it works then it will be a significant upgrade, however this processor is now at the end of its "sales life".

However if you are playing games, then you need single core performance almost more than the number of cores that you have.

Lots of great info here:
http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/#motherboard-compatibility

You'll need the CPU, an adapter sticker, and to mod your mobo or notch the chip.

You can OC a xeon as I'm running an X5460 at 4.1ghz in an Asus P5Q PRO right now. I'm using an 7950 and not holding it back too much. I don't plan a new build till the Oculus Rift system requirements come out.

The E5450 (which is a q9650 with lower TDP) would be a good balance for the 7850 or lower. The ram might be an issue though and hold back how much you can overclock. Won't be a problem if you're not overclocking though.

This is old but relevant to some of your questions on performance:

This mod in no way should be used for a start from scratch system. But if you already have a compatible 775 board and ram, its a very cheap way to stretch the life of the system.

Even if the OP did live near a MC, there's $150 buy in for a new system. That's the G3258, mobo, and ram. Even overclocked, its not going to beat out a Xeon upgrade cost less than $50.
