My new 280x is regularly exceeding 95°c. This appears to cause some fail safe to kick in or something because after a few minutes of playing a demanding game the card will half it's clock speed to 500mhz to cool down, resulting in terrible performance.

I believe I have optimal airflow in my case so that shouldn't really be a cause.

Is this card fubar? Should I RMA it?

Solution
Just an update on this. I decided to investigate and took off the cooler. And would you believe? No thermal compound on the cooler! I think I'll avoid vtx3d products in the future. I'm surprised the card didn't burn out.

I applied thermal compound and its running at regular temps now, so problem solved.

Do you have good airflow? If it is good airflow, RMA it. Make sure it isn't reference.
