There's no guarantees that mixed sets will play nice, used to be easy w/ DDR and DDR2, but these days, with the abundance of chips available and sticks, it can be and often is problematic. If you try and have problems give me a shout, it's become a specialty of mine, the forums here and all over are full of threads of people who tried mixing and have had problems.
Buying the same time is recommended. Me Besides my laptop I've almost never had the same RAM in all slots. I do at least try to match up a pair for each Channel though. Like now i have 2 2GB Samsungs and 2 2GB GSkill. Both are of very similar timings and same speed. Never had an issue and been running like that for a few years now.

Honestly except for overclocking I've never had any issue mixing RAM.
