I am going to upgrade my i7 4770k to a i7 4790k . my current motherboard is a aus z87 rog maximus vi hero . I have had no luck with overclocking my i7 4770k with my asus z87 rog hero . I can only get my i7 4770k stable @ 4.3ghz . the i7 4790k has a stock turbo frequency of 4.4ghz that all ready beats my overclocked i7 4770k . I can get a good deal on the asus z97 pro . would I be able to get more out of my i7 4790k if I were to upgrade my motherboard to a asus z97 pro ? or would going form a asus z87 rog hero to a asus z97 pro be a downgrade ?

You could have been unlucky with the CPU "lottery" and may have received a chip that just does not want to overclock. Overclocking is never guaranteed so your motherboard was probably not the factor. The 4770k is notorious for having poor thermals at even slight overclocks. As to your question, you could always get the 4790k and see how you like the performance of it on your current board and if you choose to upgrade, you could. You should have no problems overclocking on any z87 / z97 board. There is really not much difference between z87 / z97... the main differences pertain to storage features.

Do you even really need the performance increase (which is slight considering the cost to upgrade)? Will you reuse your chip or do you have someone waiting to purchase it? It is quite an expensive upgrade for which the performance increase does not justify the cost.
