When is an AMD CPU better than a Intel CPU?

I hear Intel is better for gaming because of its stronger single core performance or something along those lines. If Intel is better for gaming, when is AMD better than Intel in terms of anything besides gaming? I hear it's good for video encoding or servers but I'm not particularly sure if that is true. Thanks.

I would want an AMD over an Intel for an HTPC rig due to the superior graphics of their APU's. You can get a Kabini build that will handle even 4k video, for about the price of an i3 4130. Asrock has a board that even allows you to run the system with a 19v power adapter, like you would find for a laptop.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD 5350 2.05Ghz Quad-Core Processor ($60.74 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: ASRock AM1H-ITX Mini ITX AM1 Motherboard ($58.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $119.73

AMD is better for well threaded tasks compared to the i5s (but not the i7s)

Since AMD prices their 4C/8T like Intel's 4C, AMD techncailly wins at this price point for productivity.

For instance, I need to OC my i5 to match a stock FX 8320 in Handbrake (non AVX2) and some other productivity like AFEx and Preiere

AMD Cards often have higher clock speeds, but are less efficient. Basically, AMD offers more "bang for your buck". For example, a 120 dollar AMD card would outperform a 120 Intel card, but Intel cards are going to out perform AMD cards when you go into the higher end stuff.
