Okay so i got a friends macbook pro here, apple support tells me its a mid 2009 model 15" however they wont give me the model number for some reason, and the model number is scratched off on the back. So when i try to turn it on, it beeps, i took it in to geeksquad at best buy, they told me its either a mother board problem or a power problem, how do i find out for myself, and then how do i fix it, where do i get the parts. Or is it even possible, without spending 7 trillion dollars getting it refurbished by apple? Please help this guys gonna give me a smoking deal if i wanna buy it.

I also forgot to mention, when you shake the device there is a rattling sound on the inside, as if something is loose, it may be a screw as one is missing from the back panel.

Alright, slow down, and take this one step at a time. There are several things to try before we can determine what the issue is.

#1. Geeksquad is not good and have no clue what they're talking about when it comes to Apple products depending on the person you talk to of course. Apple is a league all its own when it comes to troubleshooting, treat it as such.

#2. How many times does it beep, does it show video at all, any flashing folder icon? Beeping on a Macbook is normally associated with a ram or logic board issue.

#3. Your machine I.D. is Macbook5,4 or Macbook5,3 depending on which 15-inch you have.

It shows no video, and when i turn it on it beeps once about every 5 seconds. I am not sure which one, all they would tell me is thats its a macbook pro 15' mid 2009 model, i went to online apple support and gave them the serial number, and thats all they would tell me as well even though i continually asked for the model number.

Yeah, Apple support is...just no. I checked Mactracker and your model number is missing as well. (Conspiracy? Maybe.)

How many times does it beep total, or is it continuous? If it beeps a total of 5 times, it's a CPU issue (and not worth fixing). If it is continuous, that's...weird. Apple Support claims it beeps only once. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547

Edit: This article says once every 5 seconds is a ram issue. Not sure if this applies to your model. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5860?viewlocale=en_US

If it is ram, wouldn't there be video? and where might one go about purchasing ram, and is it easy to replace?

I love older apple products, I've got a ton from the late 90's to around 2005, build quality was amazing and looked like nothing the computer industry had ever seen before or since. When they started to sacrifice performance and usability for useless crap like making it .02lbs lighter or .003mm thinner I lost interest.

Digging through the Apple support forums (gotta love that) I found that

"Tone(s) Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat No RAM installed"

I think this may be a ram issue. Do you know how to open it up and take a look? It could be that the ram is not seated properly, or is missing entirely (maybe).

Here's a take-apart guide in case you need it: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Unibod...

Not always, I've heard of a lack of ram causing no video. This could also be a motherboard issue with reading the memory, so it's not a definite fix, just one in the many steps of troubleshooting. Ram is available from a variety of retailers, but I would confirm that it is indeed the issue first.

Take a look at your pm i sent you some stuff, but its now letting me reply. And there is nothing next to the battery also diagonal from the logic board, and a loose cable i beleive this may be where the ram is supposed to go, if so that's absolutely hilarious!! hahaha

There also appears to be a missing area connected to the mother board, two slots, also possibly ram.

Take a look at the PM I sent you, but if there's no overly-obvious blue ram chip in there, I think we may have found your problem! Haha.

You've got to wonder why anyone would remove the hard disk and RAM from a working Mac. And why would they scratch off the model number?

I would put this down and walk swiftly away from it.

Just had that exact conversation with him in PM. Smells fishy.

I'm guessing that the computer is unservicable and possibly stolen. It sounds as if Apple have the serial no. reported as stolen, which is why they are being so cagey. Still, at least they now know where it is!
