I've an old Compaq Presario 5500 CRT Monitor with maximum resolution 1024x768 60Hz Supported.
So I created a custom resolution(Nvidia Control Panel) of 1280x768 60Hz to play games on higher resolution.
And it worked and I was able to play games on 1280x768 60Hz resolution(yet it gave a widescreen on desktop, but it was fullscreen when playing Assassin's Creed IV).

So my question is it the long term use of this much resolution safe for my CRT Monitor.

monitors don't display what they can't. there's no long term damage but you should get yourself a newer monitor, the crt-s and espcially those old models can really mess up your eyes espcially if you are too close to it.

You might have set it for 1280, but because the max it can show is 1024 you aren't seeing ~200 lines. Won't damage the monitor, but you really need to get a new one.
