best CPU for board....for gaming?

Hi, PLEASE, PLEASE could someone help. My son has a AMX FX 4100 CPU and I was wondering what CPU would be best for his current motherboard for gaming???
I can stretch for a new CPU but I haven't enough money for a motherboard too.

sorry, don't have motherboard to hand, (I can look later as I'm at work) I thought any chip that fits the same socket as AMD FX would work???

It's an AM3+ processor and for the most part you're right, but not all AM3+ motherboards can handle all AM3+ processors (for example, some mobos are limited to the 95w models like your 4100 and wouldn't be able to handle a 125w CPU).

You may be best updating this thread when you get home?

do you know what CPU's are better than the FX4100 for gaming as I have no idea IF Athlon or phenom is better??

The fx4100 sells for about £60 on ebay... you won't do much better for the same price

Well using the CPU support list from gigabyte you're fairly limited. I'd avoid the AM3 CPUs like the phenoms, even the best on that list would be a relatively minor upgrade. Anything from the FX-6200 upwards would be ok but it's hard to find many of these in the UK.

The best I could find is these:

One is over budget and both are outside the UK, so you may have to pay import duty on top. Less than ideal.
