I have got an old pc with an intel core 2 quad and a nvidia gt 9600. I'm looking for upgrades to do, it will be a project so i wont spend a lot of money at once.
I was looking at the amd fx 6300 and a 270x or 280x
in the netherlands a 270x costs around 160 euros and a 280x 270 euros. wich one would be the best choice for performance and future upgrade?
also what would be the best choise first to upgrade the cpu or the gpu? because i would want to keep gaming in the mean time and wich would give me the best performance?

Solution
270x most certainly for a year on high. Even more if you drop the settings later. But noone can tell precisely, depends on a specific game. Q6600 is a decent cpu, especially when overclocked to 3 GHz. On a solid air cooler (required for oc) and a quality power supply of at least 550w (a must) you would have no issues at all gaming with the 270x, even 280x.

As I told you before, I have nearly the same hardware. Granted, I installed 8GB of memory, but still... No issues at all.
Sir, I am still gaming with Core 2 Quad Q9550 and Radeon R9 280X (yeah, a bit of overkill, but I enjoy this fact, lol). Every single game @ max details @ full HD. No slowdowns, no hiccups. Didn't try Watch Dogs, but this one is supposedly not well optimised anyway.

So, my suggestion would be to get 270X and see how happy are you with it. You might very well be.

Several things to watch for:

1) Your power supply needs to be a quality one
2) You need at least 4 GB, preferably 8GB of RAM

thanx for the fast answers, i know i had to upgrade the motherbord, i could get a motherbord and amd 6300 for around 160 euros, so i will be upgrading it eventually. would you have any psu recomendation? i was looking if i were to upgrade it to do a 270x in crossfire, or would you recommend just to buy a 280x at once? so:
270x and psu for about 220 euros and later 270x in crossfire (maybe)
or 280x and psu for about 320 euros? (is the 280x a lot more future proof?)
thx

i just checked and found out that i have a intel core 2 quad q6600 at 2,4 ghz. woult that still be enough for gaming? or would it be best if i saved to buy everything at once? and about how long will the 270x and 280x last?

thx for the information all ill be looking in to it further, just a couple final questions. what 280x do you use, herrwizo? i found a xfx 280x (not the black version) at 850mz for 230 euros, would you say the 60-70 euro (about 90 dollars or 50 pounds) difference would be worth it?

I use gigabyte model with 3gb, factory overclocked, with windforce 3x cooler. Cant remember the exact code of the model, but it is fairly common. It is worth it, get it. The good thing here is that you have nothing to lose. Yeah, a cpu bottleneck is there, but you still get great fps. And the card will stay with you with next build as well. Just make sure you get a proper power supply as well! It has to be at least 550w, but a quality one, like seasonic, xfx, or corsair ax, rm or hx.
