My partners 3 year old win 7 laptop just packed up. System fan not spinning (error 90b). Have fired a load of compressed air through all the vents and the fan turns under pressure from air, but not when I then switch it on. My question is - If I buy a new win 8.1 laptop can I dump the win 8.1 software and install win 7 (have disk) or will I have a problem with all the other drivers etc that came as basic to the laptop (pre win 8 being installed). I am prepared to use win 8.1 but she wants to play all her old XP games that manage to run on win7, bur probably not on WIN 8.

In my experience, anything that runs on Windows 7 will run on Windows 8, so it would be worth trying that first. You can disable the Metro UI entirely if you want to only use the desktop.

If you do want to downgrade, you'll need to get new Windows 7 drivers. Make sure to check the manufacturer's site first to see if they even have Windows 7 drivers for that model.

For drivers, you won't have any issue. W7 is still largely used by the community, especially by the gaming one. Unless the vendor specifically locks out other OSes, you won't have issues...

What I'm more concerned at is that w8 seems to be aggressively sticky. It might be as easy as popping in the disk, formatting and installing, as long as you keep a backup of the original OS on disk for warranty.

Otherwise, like it happened to two of my friends' laptops, you have to take out the HDD, format it from another OS using an external bay, put it back in and install normally...

Went out and bought an HP pavilion 15-N267 (AMD) with WIN 8.1. Must say I'm impressed with it so far - even though it's taking a bit of getting used to. Won't bother putting win & on at the moment as we are busy doing usual updates and working out what does what. My othert half has always sat and watched me whenit comes to setting up/rebuilding. This time she wants me to sit to the side and she wants to do it all!! Not easy when I'm having to give her instructions that I know what they mean but she doesn't. What FUN !!
