I recently bought an ASUS GTX 760 OC graphics card, and I am dissapointed in the performance in my computer. I dumped $300 on a graphics card and cant run WoW on highest settings with smooth performance. I have done all of the necessary cleanups to maintain my computer fresh, and still no boost.

On the other hand, it might not be the graphics card at all. I have a AMD Athlon II x4 640 3.0GHz. Lots of sites say that it meets all the standard pre-reqs for gaming and I should be fine with this combination of graphics card/CPU. ANy ideas what the problem is? I also play on 1280x1024 resolution so I should naturally increased computer performance.

Computer Specs

ASUS GTX 760 OC
AMD Athlon x4 640 3.0GHz
8GB ram.

What was your previous card?
My 965, which is a bit higher performance than yours, bottlenecked a 760 at stock speeds, it took an OC from 3.4 to 4.0GHz to alleviate it.

With a 760, you should have absolutely no GPU-related performance problems at 1080p - even my old HD5770 can play MoP fine at 1200p with nearly everything maxed out.

WoW is heavily dependent on single-threaded performance. Unfortunately for you, this is AMD's greatest weakness.

True on both counts.

A 760 is a good midrange GPU and should be fine for 1080p. The old CPU is holding you back. And my guess is the motherboard and RAM with it will *NOT* work for a current CPU.

I'd suggest this (* Check that these will fir in your current PC case):

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wqNJMp

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($109.99 @ TigerDirect)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($74.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($79.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $294.95
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

That will be a good match for your 760, especially if you put a mild OC on the CPU. 4.4-4.5GHz is easily reachable with that cooler and board.

If you ONLY play WoW, you could even drop this down to an i5 or i3 setup for the improved per-core performance.

I really appreciate it guys! I have a question though if I am going to go through with this. If I decide to just upgrade to a Phenom II x4 3.4GHz, will it be worth it at all?
