I am looking to set up a small office server, the purpose of the server will be :

Sharing office suite documents between 4 computers within the office so that we can both read and write to the documents that can we accessed locally and remotely.

Being able to create users with limited access to the files, such as read only and the ability to restrict access to certain folders eg. only see the folders I wish them to see.

In addition the company I work for own a domain name and are paying for another company to host it, however the company that hosts it does not allow us to create our email address ie cody@mydomain.com. Would I be able to host our website and create amd host our own domain email addresses from the server in question and well as having the database that we can share files on?

I am far from a IT expert, I am just your Average Joe that takes an interest in IT having only just built my first PC last week. I am a quick study and welcome the opportunity for any quality reading that you can point me in the direction of that relates to these matters.

If you think it can be achieved by a novice please do tell me what hardware and software that you would recommend. Or is this too much of an undertaking for a novice?

Thanks Cody.

Well, I think you could buy a small server from Dell/HP and configure the network file shares pretty easily.

However, the email domain name may take a little more work. You will have to change hosting providers if your current one simply won't do it. Call a web host like GoDaddy and ask them how much it would cost to get your own email domain hosted. They can give you a good idea of what it might cost. Sometimes you can also get better monthly savings if you host your domain & website with the same provider. So it might be cheaper to host everything with the same one. Of course, you would also have all of your eggs in the same basket, so choose wisely.

As a 2nd option, you might be able to get a local IT services company to quote you on an install of Windows Servers Essentials R2. It includes email, website, and file sharing all in one setup. There will be an larger initial outlay of $, but in the end, you will be able to control it all yourself. You will still need someone to provide domain services, so a call to GoDaddy (or whomever) will still be needed.
