I've just started playing far cry 3'and I'm noticing a very strange frame rate issue. Quite often it will appear that the game is dropping frames when fraps and precision are reporting a solid 60fps. It will stutter for a second or so then go back to normal but this happens quite frequently. The only time I notice actual frame rate drops is during firefights. I'm running the game pretty much everything maxed except water and aa and vsync on. Any thoughts as to what could be causing these odd stutters?

Win 7 64
I7 870 3.0gz
560 ti sli latest wqhl drivers.
12gigs DDR 3

I had better hardware than you and had problems. lower settings/lower resolution.......... your cpu and your graphics cards can't handle the game.

The STUTTER you are having is normal for this game.

I have a better computer and had major issues until I dropped some settings. It may be related to VSYNC as things were smoother with it off, but the screen tearing was horrible.

Drop your quality settings to their lowest and see if the stuttering stops. If it does, you then have to play with the settings to find the best balance between occasional stutter and visual quality.

The thing is though neither my cpu or gpu is being maxed out when I'm getting theses stutters and I'm not getting any reported fps drops so I don't think insufficient hardware is the reason.

then you're in denial.

Photonboy- yeah I agree, it's smoother with vsync off but the screen tearing makes it unplayable. I'll mess around with the settings a bit more to see if one thing in particular is causing stutter.

Update:

1) I missed the fact you had SLI so your performance should be better than I thought. I also found someone stating they could improve performance in SLI but I can't test that myself. This fix may not even apply now though. I'd be surprised if NVidia hadn't sorted that out in their drivers.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=371618

Also this comment:
"open farcry 3 profile with inspector, and change SLI bits for DX11

0x000902F5 to 0x0C1902F5"

2) There are SLI issues as well due to frame time variance, though it's possible newer drivers may work better. It's worth reading THIS however: http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics-Cards/NVIDIA-GeFo...

I also suggest you try disabling SLI and run on a single card to see if that works better for you. Your frame rate would drop, but it may be smoother. Also, the above link refers to the GTX780 but it seems to apply to other AMD and NVidia cards.

3) Adaptive VSYNC:
I suggest you also try this. If you're over 60FPS then VSYNC will be on, however it will be automatically turned off below 60FPS. This may help certain types of stutter. FRAPS reports an average so it may not register really quick drops but those might register visually.

Adaptive VSync is forced on (should be done per game, not globally) through the NVidia Control Panel under "Manage 3D settings"; if you recently launched the game, just click "ADD" and then add the link that appears. That's easier then hunting down the EXE file manually.

Check that your VRAM isn't saturated, it can happen if your 560 Tis are 1GB, as FC3 can use 1.2GB VRAM on 1680x1050.

Edit: Try to disable HT, this game if from the era when HT caused problems, like in BF3.
