High temps on i5-2500k and Corsair H60

Hey everyone,

I have an i5-2500k paired with a Corsair H60 on a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H motherboard. When I first set it up a few years ago, I immediately overclocked it to 4.5GHz and my Prime temps never went above 75C.

I recently started getting BSOD's, so I reset the BIOS back to default. Then I reformatted and decided a couple of months later to overclock again (thinking maybe it was a software issue that caused the BSOD's).

Well, the BSOD's stopped. But now my Prime temps all of a sudden are hitting 85C! I have my voltage set to 1.35 in the BIOS, but I've noticed that the core voltage fluctuates under load between 1.35 and 1.4 (LLC is set to 6 in BIOS). I've read that up to 1.5 is safe, so I feel like that's not the problem.

My cooler is roughly 3 years old. Maybe the pump is dying or the water inside has evaporated? I have 1 fan on it (I tried 2 in a push-pull config early on, but didn't notice much of an improvement), configured as an intake. Pulling air from outside of the case over the radiator (my case has a top exhaust fan that immediately pulls that air out).

Any thoughts?

Additional considerations:

I keep it at about 70F in my apartment. I tried reapplying thermal paste (AS5) using the line method. Marginal improvement, if any. Case is kept clean, I dust it out often. I have 2x 120mm front intakes and a 140mm top exhaust, in addition to the radiator fan.

Hi. I am inclined to think it is the cooler. Those H60's weren't any better than some air coolers and now it has some time on it.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. I tried another cooler before the H60, I can't remember which one. It worked really well, but was loud. I like the H60 because it's pretty quiet. Anyway, maybe it's time to switch.

I'm wondering, should anyone happen to be familiar-ish with my board, perhaps I could post my BIOS settings (with regard to the overclock) and see if anyone has any suggestions...

I am using a Gelid Tranquillo Air Cooler. It is quiet and I was able to get 4.6 Ghz on the 2600k I had in here and got the same with the 4770k I have in here now. I tried for 4.8, but it cried uncle and BSOD'd and went back to 4.6 Ghz where it is now. Stays nice and cool and is stable. I'm not all that familiar with your MOBO, only that it is a good one.

I'm thinking I'll just snag a 212 EVO for cheap and try that. Even if the cooler somehow isn't the problem, the H60 won't last forever, so it's probably a good idea to have a back-up.

Edit:

From looking at various overclocking guides and forum posts, it seems like a lot of people are able to achieve 4.5 GHz with my chip/board at 1.33v. Yet, my system fluctuates between 1.35 and 1.4. That seems high, like I shouldn't need that much voltage.
