Hi guys. I wanna try to make my own computer, and I don't have a huge budget. So far I've picked out the Radeon R7 260X, but I'm hesitant to spend more money on my CPU than my GPU on a gaming computer. So if I buy the Intel Core 2 Q8200, will it work for gaming? I'd rather not spend the $180 on an i5-3340 if at all possible, but something like a Q8400 or Q6700 wouldn't be that much more expensive if I needed to upgrade.

Hi,

It depends on what games.
most modern games would not run more than low / medium resolution @ 1080, and that is if they run.
BF4 needs a modern cpu (core i5 / fx-6300 ) to run at meduim / high. Also depends what you graphic card is.

As stated in the OP, it's a Radeon R7 260X. What about the Q8400 or Q6700?

Hello,

Q8400 is newer, has 1333 FSB and a lower TDP (95W), but it has only 4 MB cache.
Q6700 is older, has 1066 FSB, 8 MB cache, a higher TDP (105W) and will be less prone to compatibility issues with the mobo. You should buy a good cooler though, because that CPU is running close to its designated TDP.

If you can find one reasonably priced, the best will be an Q9xxx. Also, if you can live with a dual core, you can take an E8400/8500/8600 (3, 3.16, 3.33 GHz).

Just be sure your motherboard supports those CPUs (G41, 43, 45 or P41, P43, P45 chipsets).
