Here's my dilemma.

My CPU is getting old. The Phenom II x6 1055T might have been good when I bought it two years ago, but therein lies the problem - it's outdated.

Also, I bought a new case that has USB 3.0 features that my current mobo isn't compatible with. Two usb slots on my computer is useless, and I NEED those.

Here's the thing
1) If I buy the new processor, I'm going to have to get a compatible mobo.
2) I'm on a pretty limited budget.

I'm torn between buying a new USB 3.0 motherboard (gigabyte ud3p 970a) and just overclocking my CPU, or buying a new motherboard with a new cpu (ASRock Z97 PRO4, i5 4670k) and pretty much future proofing my rig, saving me money in the long run.

What should I do?

If you need usb3.0 front panel, you can buy a pci add in card that supplies a usb3.o controller and front panel header. It should not be overly expensive.

Overclocking a X6 is not likely to do much good, but it is worth a try.

Do consider the i5-4690K and a Z97 based motherboard. It is as good as it gets for gaming today, and is likely to be good for the next two generations.

I would get the 4690k.
