Hi,

I feel like something is bottlenecking my machine as i am lacking fps in some games. As i have a 780 you wouldn't expect to have any problems but problems mainly occur in CPU intensive mmo games. I have a feeling that the AMD FX 8350 is letting me down a little and upgrading could improve my fps immensely. Does anyone have any suggestions to improve my overall performance in games?

Current specs:
Processor: AMD FX8350 8 core.
Mobo: M5A99X EVO
RAM 2x 4GB 1600Mhz Hyperx Blu
GPU: EVGA SC 780 6GB
PSU: Corsair CX750w
Case: 750d
Watercooling: H80i
Storage: 7200rpm 1tb HDD (planning to get ssd soon before you say)

I seriously doubt the FX-8000 series would lag in games, especially MMOs. This sounds more like something is wrong with your rig. Updated drivers/BIOS/Windows?

You should even check you didn't accidentally throw your RAM in single channel.
If I recall correctly CPU-Z should give you that info, but you can always check the RAM stick placement on your mobo.

The 4690k is probably the best choice, but I'm not sure it's really worth upgrading since you'd have to replace the CPU and motherboard and then you'd be looking at something like 400 bucks for an upgrade that's probably only 20-30% on your minimum frame rate scores in single thread heavy games . . . Are you already overclocking your 8350 pretty aggressively? What games specifically, because looking up some benchmarks between the 3570k/4670k/4690k in those games might tell you if it's going to be worth it for you or not.

At this point it might be better just to deal with it and wait until something that is really worth it come along, unless you can sell your gear to someone for a decent price, or maybe change it to be a working machine rather than a gaming box.

Hmm, that's interesting.

The i5 will certainly be stronger, especially for single threaded applications, but I'm not sure if it's the root of your problem.
Are you sure nothing's throttling?
Do you have the ram set to the stated speed by means of its OC profile?

The cost of a new board, CPU and OS seems a bit extravagant for a small percentage gain imo, it will definitely be an improvement but I have a sneaking suspicion something else is happening in your system.

Most games can make use of only 2-3 cores.
Most depend on a few individual fast cores.
To see how this might apply to your games, disable two cores in your bios for the FX-8350 and see if you are negatively impacted.
I expect not.

A i5-4690K will be about as good as it gets for you with a conservative oc.
