Is CPU the one to upgrade? (~DayZ)

Hello Community!

I've recently been playing DayZ (Standalone and the mod), atm i play the mod with overpoch (awesome mod).
Anyways back to THE QUESTION.

From what i know DayZ is pretty CPU heavy, but i have no idea how CPU heavy and if mine is good enough, basically i'm really dumb when it comes to the techy part of computers :)

Aight, so when i play the game i'm getting an ok fps (guess it's around 20, 30 at best.)
I'm wondering which part in my computer would help the most and if possible any suggestions on what i should replace it with.

There are no good cpu upgrades that fit your current motherboard.
Therefore, a motherboard change is in order.
If your ram is 1.65v or less, then you can reuse it with any modern motherboard. Otherwise, you need new ram.
If your copy of windows is retail or upgrade, you can freely move it to a replacement motherboard.
If it is OEM you have to talk to MS to do the switch. Legally, you can't, but they are surprisingly lenient if assured you are not a pirate and will use it on no other pc.

A perennial and good question.
Here is my stock answer:
To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run your games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.


Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 70% and see how you do.


You could also experiment with removing one core in the bios. This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system, and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.

My guess is cpu; the X6 is not noted as a good gamer. The cores are inefficient, and few games can use more than 2-3 of them.

There are no processors you can upgrade to that are stronger without also changing the motherboard , RAM and probably operating system . You could overclock a little and see if that makes any difference . Then you would know is the cpu is holding you back .

But the graphics card is likely the weak link anyway . The 580 is a couple of generations old , and while its still decently powerful , its not as good at some of the new rendering tricks that games use .

A GTX 770 or Radeon R9 290 should give you better performance

Aight, well i do not have a specific budget atm, i just got a job so i will get some money soon and i honestly don't know how much i've made this month x)



I will do those "tests" in a bit, got some other things i got to do first ^^




Yeah i have been suspecting the graphics card, but do i really have to change out the Motherboard, Ram and possibly the operating system, just to change the CPU? o_O
I'll try to overclock it a little, never overclocked before so how much would you recommend overclocking it to?

the recommended CPU for that game is the Intel Core i5-2300 but you will need to upgrade your motherboard, if your on a budget you get get a asus z77-a for the motherboard, everybody who is saying you need a graphics card upgrade is wrong because your graphics card beats the recommended graphics card for that game
