I have an Epson Stylus NX415 and I just bought the 69 Black Ink Cartridge for it, but it does not have any color cartridges, and it just says " Ink Cartridges cannot be recognized." Does this mean that I automatically must have the color cartridges for it to work?

Yes. All cartridges must be present and none must be empty. Frustrating, but most inkjet printers all makes have that requirement, so don't let that affect your choice of brand when time comes to replace it (though for quite separate reasons I personally wouldn't have an Epson again based on my previous experience with one, and it wasn't a cheap model either).
