the system has a 4gb misc. stick of ram in it

I want to add in a Kingston 1600 stick of ram

I know the ram installed already is running at 1600 but its unmarked and the voltages and such match up

so my question is can I add in the ram and hope it will work? or not?

I didnt notice the difference but I've never been one to do rendering/editing/3d I just game and do mediocre Java and C/C+ coding so again cant be of use sorry.

Its really random whether it'll work or not. Some mobos work perfectly fine with different sticks and some wont even recognize the sticks unless there a pair. Wouldnt risk it just buy a new 8gb set

Like I said its random whether it'll work or not. I have tried it but it never worked for me but theres tons of people on the net who said they've gotten it to work. If you really want to you can try to put it in but i highly doubt it'll work because their different sized sticks, if they were the same single sticks then maybe it would recognize it as a pair but if it doesnt work just replace the 4gb stick with the 8gb stick if you really need the extra RAM

Whoa thats 32gb RAM. Do you even need all that? And like ive said twice already Mobos will only 100% recognize a set of RAM if its bought in the pair. If you have two single identical sticks it might have a higher chance of recognizing them both and run in multi-channel but its not assured.

Unless your doing hardcore editing/rendering you wont need that much RAM. What do you use you system for? If for gaming then do like how I previously mentioned and replace the 4gb stick with the 8gb one and you'll be fine.

If you do things like 3D,Editing,Rendering then its not worth the risk of buying another 3 individual sticks identical to the one you have and then possibly not having them work. Just buy a new set of like 2x8gb and this'll assure that it'll work

the stick I have is still in the anti-static rapper at the moment and I have 4x 16gb-2133 sticks in one of my rendering rigs and it max's the ram out in 3dmax and other apps and it annoys the hell out of me. even my vps with 128gb of ram hits it's max when I go over board with the rendering :(

Oh ok see knowing that you do rendering helps. Then if your going for something like a 32gb kit I would definitely not risk getting 3 more individual identical sticks just buy a whole new kit of 4x8gb.

Getting a whole new kit will save you big time because this way its assured the kit will work, getting the extra sticks might save you a couple bucks instead of a new kit but your not assured it'll work

I can max 128gb of ddr3-1600 in minutes if I render with all 8 cores and such on my main rig so if I want to render hardcore on this rig should I go for ddr3-2133?? ive never used ddr3-2133 so I have no idea if its better/worse

Sorry I too lack experience when it comes to that. Ive only used DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866 sticks sorry I dont know how much faster it is.
