making this for my friend, $1500 dollar budget, he is going to play games like BF4, Minecraft, which is extremely demanding at 1080p, and other games, he wants it to last him as well, I picked this out for him, is this a good build?

Perfect....exactly what I put in my $1750 builds w/ one exception.... I was using Seasonic M12s which were under $100 few weeks back.

1. Phanteks Case rocks ..... nothing else even comes close..... Add a few SP140s for cooling, again nothing touches them om performance / noise ratio. If ya need help with the fan PCB gimme a yell. My desktop is an Enthoo Primo build (w/ custom water cooling)

2. I'd use the Phanteks air cooler over any AIO any day....the combo will be very very silent. I have used 30-40 of these buggers...every install goes "easy as cake .... piece of pie" :)

3. Mushkin ... watch it peeps will think ya an ole fart like me. back in the day, Mushkin was all any enthusiast used but they still using Hynix modules in those Redlines and gratz on being wise enough to choose then low profile versions....(I have the 2400s)

4. I have two 840 pros and two SSHDs in my Primo rig .... wait a minute .... I better go upstairs and make sure all my parts are still there !

5. The new MSI 780 rocks ... only disappointment was the Elpida memory (they used Hynix on 780 Ti)....still the best of the bunch and extremely quiet. Since I was water cooling, I went with the Asus (Hynix memory), but on air I'd do MSI

6. And yes, have same monitor

Second Link leads to my build which you so kindly copied.

Even has the same permalink. Coincidence? I think not. #Busted #StillDontMind #ShouldntLieItsCoolToUseSomeoneElsesBuild

I don't mind either :)  I built mine back in October and several others since. My personal rig has some differences as it's under water (so bigger Primo case and twin Asus 780s) but all the air cooled builds are the same except some were 2400 Mushkin and some leave out the SSD.... not really needed with the SSHD.

Well now I must honestly say not as enthused.

1. I have no use for AIOs.... obnoxiously loud and don't improve temps at equivalent fan rpms.
2. I am a bit leary of the new Gaming X series..... there were some birthing pains with the G45 / GD65 for example with NIC firmware and we are seeing what might be the same thing here with the gaming X's..... too early to tell but the similarity in many peeps posts having issues is something that's holding me back.... the GD65 has been stellar C2 and beyond..... one of the best boards for the price I have ever seen.
3. Memory is a step down but more than adequate.
4. SSHD will help ya meet that $1500 price point w/o any significant loss in performance.
5. I'd spend the leftover $ to get back to a 780
6. Wait a week for 500R to go back to $80...hits that mark just about every other week.
7. No 144 Hz is a big drop.

You have a locked cpu and a z97 board unless you want to overclock you need to get the i5 4690K but if you arent get a h97 board and remove the cpu cooler
