I've got 2 290's here at the moment, one is the Asus reference model and the other is Asus directcu ii 290. I got the reference model pretty cheap at £165 so my question is should I attach a custom cooler on that and keep it or return it and keep the directcu ii 290 which I bought for £320.

well the 155 difference pays for a whole lot of aftermarket cooler if you're confident you can attach one properly... otherwise return it and keep the directcu

I would keep the direct and return the other. You may want to figure in that the direct has a warranty in the event of any issues. One you mod the other the warranty is voided. Also the direct has been assemble and tested by Asus. If you subtract the money you get back from the cost of the direct you end up with a killer price foe a tested guaranteed caed.
