Hi all,

I'm looking for a good budget motherboard that would go well with the new intel pentium G3258, I just was wanting to know what chipsets are the best for overclocking and whether or not overclocking this cpu on a budget motherboard is a good idea?

Thanks they are good looking cheap motherboards, also another question would it be worth going with a FX-4100/FX-6300 with any other random motherboard instead. I would not be looking to overclock the AMD though.

Which would be cheaper in the long run?

The FX CPUs does have more cores, but that CPU uses AM3+ slot and that's quite old now. There's newer platforms like the FM1 and FM2.
The Pentium would be better because it's newer.
If you with FX and you're a gamer, then maybe you'll have to get a new motherboard down the road to support the latest thing for your games

In general Intel will out perform AMD in stock conditions. But AMD tend to over clock better for the price point. It depends on how much work you wanna do and if your looking for a modest overclocking gain and stability or if you want to really get in to it and squeeze out ever drop you can.

If you're going with Intel G3258 for overclocking, you have to go with the Z97 boards. As for which one will work for you, whats your budget? Asrock boards have gotten a really good name in general and with the gaming/OCing crowd. They have lower price points than Asus and Gigabyte for a lot of the same or better features. I think the build quality on Asus and Gigabyte is higher, but you take trade offs when you get in to budget systems.

Also if you want some benchmarks for comparisons sake, Toms just did a review of the G3258 last month http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pentium-g3258-overclocking-performance,3849.html.

It looks like you can get a pretty damn good overclock out of it. The nice thing is since you have to get a z97 board to OC it, you'd be compatible with current Haswell CPU's as well as the next gen Broadwell CPU's should you decide to upgrade to an i3, i5 or i7 series later on.

The problem with AMD is that you have to be wise when choosing a motherboard because of their high tdp and strain on the vrm's especially when upping to an fx 8320/8350. With Intel, any $45 board can take an i7 perfectly fine

The cheapest AMD board I would recommend is the gigabyte 970A- ud3p which is one of the very few 970 chipset boards sporting an 8+2 power phase design, something you normally see on the 990 chipset boards

If you overclock that Pentium to about 4.4/4.5ghz you will get the performance of an i3 4330 which performs quite well in games and you have the option of an i5/i7 later on
