Ok i have an fx 6300 on a msi 970a g46 motherboard and i know that this board has some issues but my vrm temps never go over 50c (that is on prime 95 for 3 hours) because i have mounted to fans on top of the heatsink. My processor is slightly overclocked and it is pulling about 120 watts and is 100% stable. So i was wondering if i got the fx 8350 and underclocked it a little to 3.8 ghz so it requires about the same amount of watts as my fx 6300 does now. would my motherboard be able to run it properly with no errors or would the 970 chipset cause a problem aswell?

Solution
The 970 chipset should behave the same between those two processors. The MSI isn't a great overclocker, but you should still see mild OCs from both the 6300 and 8350. That said... stick with the 6300. One additional module (two processing threads) won't be all that noticeable while gaming. If you were doing some intense Adobe work, then maybe the 8 thread CPU (8350) would be in order. Until then stick with the 6300. As long as your CPU cooler is keeping temps in check I don't see why you shouldn't expect 4.0 - 4.2Ghz. What CPU cooler are you using?

I'm using an CM hyper 212 evo and my fx 6300 is clocked to 4.1 ghz on stock voltage and my cpu temp never goes over 46c using prime 95 for 3 hours.I only wanted to know if the fx 8350 would be stable on a msi 970a g46 if you underclocked the cpu because i don't think i have found any forum that has managed to get the fx 8350 stable on this motherboard and none of them have tryed underclocking.
