I'm torn between two laptops with following specs:

1st one was released almost 1.5 years ago, has 3rd gen Core i3 3110M @ 2.4GHz with Intel HD 4000
2nd one was released some months ago, has 4th gen Core i3 4005U @ 1.7 GHz with Nvidia 820M (2GB dedicated)

All other specs are identical, both come with 4GB RAM. Both also cost the same.

Now which one should I go for...I'll be mostly using it for multitasking intensive work and occasionally for some light gaming.

My gut says 1st probably is faster for regular multitasking work but 2nd one has better GPU and is probably better for gaming. Am I wrong? Will there be a huge performance gap between the two if I go for the 2nd and if so where will I observe these shortcomings? Multitasking > Gaming as far priorities go, but if much speed is lost I'm willing to compromise.

Thanks.

the untold story in your comparison is the design of the 2 laptops, even without seeing the exact models i can tell the 2nd one is slimmer/lighter which for some (me included) is a big plus. count in the dedicated 820m (which even if not that powerful beats integrated any time) and i'd say the clear winner is the 2nd one.

Yes it is lighter by about 3 quarters of a pound.

But my major concern is whether it will hold up in terms of speed especially during heavy multitasking (mostly data processing + lots of chrome tabs). As I understand "U" processors are slower as it's meant for Ultrabooks, but the real question is HOW much slower and when are these slowdowns noticeable. If someone can shed light on that it would help.

4005U has much lower TDP but at the cost of performance.
It will still be fast enough for daily tasks tho.
I would go for the newer tech and lower TDP.
Both will be good for multitasking and crap for gaming.
