When you first play a game for the first time, the game sets the graphics to what it thinks the computer can run. Does it matter if you make the graphics higher.

I play games an i can use the auto detect option in the graphics settings, and if i do it sets it to high. But i can change the settings to ultra and it works fine.

What i'm asking is that id you put the graphics higher than the game suggests, is that safe or will it push my graphics card to death?

Solution
nothing to worry about, if you don't notice any difference (frame rate drops) means the game defaults aren't working as well as they should. if it works ok on ultra play on ultra. there's no such thing as pushing a card to death, if it overheats it will decrease speed automatically to avoid any damage anyway, same for most components.

Yes I always change the games setting for multiple reasons for example, If its an old game chances are it wont recognize a new graphics card and in most cases will set the graphics to quite low compared to what the card is capable of also. Alot of the time games that assign optimization dont normally take your system as a whole into account for example you might have an overclock set, a great deal of vram, large amount of Ram or decent processor in which you machine will be better then it is optimizing for you. Best bet is to keep pushing your graphics setting in game to find what you find playable for you also wouldnt hurt to use a tool like Fraps to monitor your frame rates so you can tell whether or not the settings u are using are too taxing on your computer and if you are really worried in which you probably shouldn't be use a tool like speed fan\speccy to monitor your temps in which I am sure wont matter as you should have adequate cooling. If you want and have a newish nvidia card just use Nvidia Experience to optimize your games there normally a pretty close optimization which gets game profile updates very regularly based on your rig.
