My monitor's recommended settings are 1600x900 - 60Hz.

However, none of the default desktop resolutions (from display settings) allow this, and all of them are stretched or disorted in some way.

How can I get the correct resolution for my monitor?

I've just had to start using the internal graphics card again because the external one seems to have stopped working properly. (The monitor always displays going to sleep message on start up)

Solution
For Intel HD Graphics (for your internal graphics card): Open Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel application --> Select Advanced Mode then click Ok --> Click Display tab --> Custom Resolution.
For NVIDIA GPU: Click Right Mouse Button --> NVIDIA Control Panel --> Change resolution --> Customize --> Create Custom Resolution.
I hope this information can help you. :)
