You can't easily set up a separate sub-woofer to work properly with an existing pair of PC speakers or integrated monitor speakers as there has to be the appropriate connectivity between the sub-woofer and the smaller speakers.

That means buying a 2.1 speaker set (sub-woofer plus two small speakers), or a 5.1/7.1 surround-sound speaker set if your PC supports it.
