Hello to all the people in TomsHardwareLand.

I just had a random question about old CPUs that came to me after reading through someone's post.

Why do some of the old processors have a hole in them? I've always wondered wtf that was there for.

So you can wear it around your neck. Bling bling!

It's a vent hole.

Lmao! But... but... If you have thermal paste and a heatsink on top of it, how does that vent? I always see these things with paste just crusted into the hole.

I think it's during the manufacturing process of placing the top part onto the CPU.

Edit: found a link for it - http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/intel/...

I think that, to prevent mistakes when it installing on the board. Just like a clip I don't know its actual name. Or it may be an asymmetry for proper installation. You must also consider the gap in RAM module.

It could have also been a experimental CPU so they could put a temp probe in the hole to test the heat output. Perhaps, they have better ways of doing this now.
