Hi there,

I want to buy a licensed software for playing blu-ray discs on my PC, but I have decided to ask people on this forum before I order something "stupid", since I don't have any experience with playing blu-ray movies on PC. I purchased nVidia 3D Vision® 2 glasses few days ago and beside gaming on PC I want to "enable" my Plextor PX-B950SA for 3D movies as well. After several hours spent on forums and Google, this is what I have found:

1. Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 6
2. CyberLink PowerDVD 14
3. SlySoft AnyDVD HD

Which one would you recommend, or is there something else better?

My PC spec:

MB: ASUS Maximus V Extreme
CPU: i7 3770K
GPU: EVGA GTX680 Classified 4GB x 2 (SLI)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator GT 2133MHz
PSU: Enermax Platimax 1000w
Soundcard: ASUS Xonar Essence STX
Monitor: ASUS VG248QE

Thank you in advance!

I like PowerDVD, but many like Corel WinDVD. In either case, download the trial version and insure that it works before you buy it. I cannot comment on 3D as it makes me nauseated so I don't use it, which is fairly common for those over 40 according to my brother who runs a team at Intel working on such things.

SlySoft (or a DVDFab product) may be needed to enable your playing BluRay, but we can't discuss that on the forums as it breaks the BluRay encryption key to function.

Thank you for the answer. That is a good idea, I will download a few trial versions to see which one suits me best. I just hope that those trials are not limited in terms of functionality.

You'll probably find that some of the newer and more "premium" features may not work (eg. PowerDVD trials don't support H.265/HEVC, only H.264/AVC), but most commonly-used functionality should work. It would be hard to trial a product that isn't representative of what you'd be paying for.

I ended up with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 6.7 (works with nVidia 3D glasses) . After testing it for two hours I really liked it, so I purchased full version for the price of 40€ which is fair enough.

Thank you for your time and answers...

TotalMedia Theatre is also able to play 3D Blu-ray videos, but something went wrong and I am stuck with their support since program is crashing each time I try to maximaze it in order to watch a movie in full screen. Eventually there is a 30 days money return guarantee and I will ask for my money if they are not able to tell me what is wrong from those aslog files I have provided to them few days ago.

I've run into many issues with TMT since version 3, which is why I went to PowerDVD. I've used it since version 10 without issues and I think that it is up to 14 now.

Take a good look at the versions HERE so that you get what you need but nothing extra that could make things more complex than necessary.
