I am due for a graphics card update.. I am still rocking my gtx480 lol. My price range is between 300-400 dollars. I prefer Nvidia cards but my price point is pushing me to AMD. I see I can get a reference model Diamond R9 290 for 369$ ..getting the newer ones with better cooling pushes the price up on avg 100$ bucks and out of my limit. I see R9 280x's are going for around 300 and up (with non- ref coolers) and I was wondering should I take an R9 290 ref over a newer R9 280x? Are the problems with heat that bad?

IF your case has good circulation and you're not going to overclock, the R9 290 is a better-more powerful-card, but you can rock an R9 280x with custom cooler, like the Sapphire Toxic, at settings not too far behind a 290 reference, but there is a reason that the 290 is more expensive. It is a higher performance card.

NEVER go with the reference card unless it is the only choice you have. Always get cards from name-brand companies like Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte as the offer the best cooling for that card. I have two Asus DCII cards and they are quite cool while gaming. I am planning to watercool in the near future to see how that goes.

Thanks for the replies.. I already know that a non reference cooler is better then a reference. I was asking is it soo much worse that you would get a lesser model before you would take the ref cooler. Anyway the windforce on Amazon looks like a good deal I am going with that. Thanks for the link Ish.
