Hi, I'm new to these forums, and I just received a computer from an organization called Free Geek for volunteering there for 40 hours. It's a HP business desktop with a Compaq dc7800 case and a 0AAch motherboard, and I'd like to replace this mobo so that I can get a 4th gen Intel Core i processor and DDR3 RAM (instead of DDR2). Also, I can only fit single-slot gfx cards in it right now (like my current one, a Nvidia GT610 with 1gb of DDR3 RAM). Eventually, I'd like to get a new mobo that can fit a dual-slot in it, like a GTX gfx card, or something. Can anyone suggest anything to me, or am I better off selling it and saving up for new parts? I would rather not get a new case, so if it comes to that I'll just sell it and get new parts (what's the point of that if it'll pretty much be a new computer entirely, AND it'll cost about $60 more to upgrade?). Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your prompt response! That was a lot quicker than I expected. So, what you're saying is that I can get ANY ATX mobo for this particular case, and it should fit? Everything should align perfectly? Or am I going to have to do some more research and see which ATX boards specifically fit? Because I noticed that my mobo has some outdated parts on it - such as two PS/2 ports for m&kb. Any more advice?

no I'm not - that's why I sent the link that gives the lay out for the boards for you to review and check to see what your board is and case stand off holes

it may be a ATX I just did not find any conclusive specs on that - most times the boards used by them is a micro ATX but you need to confirm that..

Were you looking for my case in particular? Or just another case with a possible mobo upgrade for this one? Because that's not my current case, if that be the case (pun intended). Forgive me, I'm just a little confused on all of this. You did say that it was possible that the motherboard was ATX, and the link you provided to pc-specs.com proved accurate. I haven't had a whole lot of time to read the pdf that you sent me, though. I think I'll take a closer look at that. In the mean time, would some photos of the case and motherboard help?

well no if the case [Compaq dc7800 ] is for a standard atx or m-atx then your good . the standoffs need to match the board you buy that's why I gave the link with the diagram

the thing is some times hp and them may use a motherboard and the case that its mounted in that's not standard and you need to determine that the case you are wanting to reuse is drilled for atx standard if so then you can safely reuse the case

you don't want to order a motherboard and then find the case standoffs don't line up or be short a hole or 2

Nah, I think I'll just sell it and start from scratch after maybe a year of use (because I want to enjoy it for a while first). After all, I haven't gotten the chance to even build a computer yet, and I would like that experience. Thanks for all of your help though, it was much appreciated!
