I have some questions or concerns about Windows 8.1 update for free. I suppose it is like a service pack of previous versions of Windows. Though I do remember reading that Support for Windows 8 vanilla will end in a few years. And there are things that I can't get on my Windows 8 Pro platform. IE11 , though you can get for 7 and 8.1. DX11.1 and DX11.2.. I have just moved my OEM System builder of Win8 pro to new MB/CPU/RAM/SSD..And it was a pain talking to those reps. Once I actually got home I was able to just use the automated service by phone. I tried Deactivating my OS but I guess that option is gone now. Still, can anyone just reinstall once using the 8.1 update, That is using the Windows Disk?? There is other things I have noticed since this fresh install that are much different from last year.

You will need to have 8.0 installed to update. It is pretty complicated process. If you have broken 8.0, it will fail update. But it is well worth to take your chances after you back up everything. It should not affect licensing.

All future updates are based on 8.1 patch. Without it you will not be able to update anything. 8.1 feels tighter than 8.0. I updated on 3 computers with no failure so far. My music computer had a lot of plugins and software- I was worrying but it survived. I did not have to tune anything as it kept all my settings- wallpapers and backgrounds.
