Hello I just finished my first gaming pc build last night, and this morning I noticed that according to my motherboard my cpu (i5 4690k) is idling around 39-40degrees. Is that safe? I have the hyper 212 evo so I would have expected it to be lower. Thanks

Solution
Idle temperatures are largely meaningless since the HSF fan is either stopped or turning so slow it hardly pushes any air. I would not worry about idle temperatures unless they were high enough to point toward an obvious mounting issue. You also need to keep ambient temperature in mind.

The real test of whether or not your HSF is installed properly is heavy threaded load. The stock HSF would run the CPU at 65-70C (no OC) so you would be looking for loaded core temperatures 10-12C lower with the 212EVO.

Just to note...my i5 4690k is currently running @ 32-35 C idle w/ an i100h cpu cooler. I was assuming it would be lower as well.

I guess I was expecting 25 degrees with w/ good airlow.
