I just reinstalled XP on an old computer I got from my work. I had a copy of XP Media Center Edition that I had on my really old computer. I purchased it directly from Microsoft.
Anyhow... After installing, I cannot connect to the internet. iexplore, exe is not even found. I had to find the drivers for the Ethernet, which is directly on the MB.
When I try to go to "Set Program Access and Defaults" and click on Internet Explorer, the "Enable Access to this Program" is already checked, but its faded out and Im not allowed to change it.
Also, Internet explorer does show up. It's not the "e" icon you typically see. The computer isnt recognizing it. Any ideas? One more thing... I havent been able to activate Windows XP because I have no internet connection.

It sounds like there may have been an error during installation. Sometimes you need to re-install again to straighten that out. Make sure your install disk is clean and save those drivers so you can install them right away.

I've installed it twice.

OK, persistent problems with installation could result from either CD or CD drive (among other things). What condition is the disk in? Is it possible you can find another compatible CD drive? It might be hard to find another (legit) XP install CD.

The CD is in great shape. It's been in its case for years. It's a 2 part CD.

Well I'm trying to think of other reasons you'd have the same error on different fresh installations. You could run HDD and RAM diagnostics to rule out problems there

... though even if a disk looks good it can contain errors. If the disk has been sitting some time there could be degradation even if you can't see signs of it. Optical disks aren't immune to decay.
