GTX 770 vs Radeon 280X, 290, what to choose? Upgrading over 7850, resolution 1980 x 1200. There is big difference in price and memory, but in performance 770 gets in top. It's so confusing.

Solution
GPU Boss did not look at games (scroll a bit lower)
and they used passmark (ew) for part of the synthetic score

There is a significant difference between the 770 and 290

The GTX 770 performs equally to the R9 280X.
The R9 290 will be the fastest out of the three.
Only get the R9 290 if it has a non-reference cooler.
The R9 280X and GTX 770 is perfect for 1200p with some extra settings like Anti Aliasing turned off for 60fps.
R9 290 is excellent for max settings 60fps at 1080p and 1440p.

r9-290 > GTX 770 == r9-280x

-the 290 is about the speed of the original titan, and a little bit faster then the 780
-the 770 is about 5% faster then the r9-280x, at stock clocks... overclocked they're basically the same card.

i just upgraded from the 7770 to r9-280x... pretty nice increase in horses... i agree with you. Was looking at r9-290s, and that was my planned upgrade, but i had a newish r9-280x fall into my lap for $150; couldn't pass up that deal.

Quick answer: I recommend the ASUS R9-290-> http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9290dc2oc4gd5

Asus R9-290 review: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/03/03/asus-radeon-r9-290-directcu-ii-oc-review/10

"From the PCB components to the large, sturdy heatsink and the metal shroud and backplate, this card oozes quality. At its default speeds it's already excellent, and although the modest overclocks mean that performance gains are fairly minimal compared to stock, it is far superior in the noise and heat department and even manages to consume a little less power too. However, it also overclocks well and makes ground on higher end Nvidia cards that are much more expensive."

*I have an Asus GTX680 that uses an earlier version of this cooler/backplate design and it's still going strong and is relatively quiet. I'm very impressed with the quality.

Other:
Look at the BENCHMARK above, or this one: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/R9_290X_Lightning/24.html

It's actually:

R9-290,
GTX770
R9-280X

So the GTX770 is in the middle. There's also a difference in VRAM. 2GB is fine for now but you may want 3GB or more to future proof. I prefer NVidia normally (PhysX, TXAA, G-Sync, Shadowplay record/stream) though.
