I just installed a Radeon HD 7850 card into my desktop. It boots fine, but I have a black screen. I can hear the window chime and the fan on the card is spinning. I've tried switching between VGA and HDMI still nothing. I am now trying to download new drivers in the hopes of fixing it. If anyone has any suggestion I would be more than willing to try them. Thanks for your time guys!

Was there a different card installed previously? Did you connect the pci-e power cable to the card?

Just to be sure (A lot of people do this, don't worry if you did too) are you running your HDMI/VGA cables to your monitor from the card itself or your motherboard? They should come from the card itself.

When you boot up, do you see the screen before windows loads with your motherboard manufacturer on it where you can enter the BIOS?

There was a different card. It was also a Radeon HD 7850. I had to send it back to the manufacturer because of it constantly artifacting. I did connect the pci-e cable to the card. I connected the HDMI/VGA directly to the card both times. The screen is black the entire time and the only indication of it booting up is the windows chime. The fan the GPU is also spinning if that makes a difference.

I tried removing the CMOS. I just updated the drivers for the card too.

Could it possibly be that my PSU isn't delivering enough Juice to it? I bought this rig from Ibuypower a while back and I've always felt that 400w Psu is way too low. The funny thing is that they are the ones that picked out this PSU.

Yes it does

If it's a prebuilt system there could be something funky going on with it not wanting to automatically switch over to the GPU without the integrated disabled, but otherwise I think the card might be DOA.

I really hope not because I do not have the funds to buy a new one.

I missed the post about it being a 400w power supply. Yes, that definitely could be the problem. Do you have someone else's computer you could try it in to test it(the GPU)?

Yes I could try it in a friend's rig in a day.
I actually was able to get the card to display on my monitor, but I've ran into another problem. It now displays two blue verticle lines.

Just letting you know that the psu is really not that good. Anyways, make sure that you uninstall any old drivers that you may have on the computer. In your bios, there is something called intel multidisplay (that is if you have an intel cpu) and if you have monitors connected to both integrated and external, turn that on, and if you don't turn that off. Most likely though you should update your bios because it may have some issues, but my gut feeling is that even though the psu is rated for 400 watts, it isn't delivering that and you are having a problem. Are the lights on the card lighting up? If they aren't, but the fans are spinning, that is either A) not enough power to the gpu B) DOA card.

My 7870 hawk came DOA. Both fans spun, but no lights. Anyways, I would RMA the card for another before buying another power supply. You could always go to a local pc shop (or a friend ;) ) and see if they have a more powerful psu that you could use to test the card. You can always test the card in a different system too.

Probably a dumb question, but let's say that my gpu is no longer covered under warranty. Anything I could do with it?

Login if it has vertical lines then RMA, it's a fault of some kind. My advice though, don't use that PSU with the replacement GPU you receive. get a new one ASAP
