I had a question posted up about a future upgrade for my current rig, but i only have this one question. Recently, i looked up the graphics card's power consumption and it said i needed at least 500w minimum. I did some basic math and found out that it wasn't enough.

My future upgrade/build is:

PowerColor Radeon R9 280x 3gb

AMD FX-8350

Corsair Vengeance 12gb RAM

XFX TS 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (this was recommended to me in my previous post)

I currently have an Ultra 650w PSU, but was told that it was too weak for those parts because it was Tier 5, and i was told to go for higher Tiers if possible. As a reminder, i am NOT going to overclock these parts whatsoever. They are powerful and fast enough for my needs. I already own a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus (10w), and an MSI 970A-G46 (70w) motherboard.

The question is: Is that really the necessary wattage i need for the card, or is that because they expect the consumer to Overclock the card?

500W would be the recommendation for the entire system (the recommendation is higher, but that's what the 500W probably meant). 550W will be easily enough if you're not going to overclock.

You probably need around 150-200 watts for that card, But that's just a guess.

Tom's claims that at max this GPu will run 257 W
In this one : http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-8350-vishera-rev...
Tom's claims average power used while benchmarking of FX-8350 is around 185 W and on the chart we can see spikes at 350 W.

I would recommend you at least a 700 W PSU like the corsair CX 750 at 90$

I wouldn't recommend that particular PSU, it uses bad capacitors that may cause issues in the future.

Besides, the 350 is in Watt-hours (energy consumption for all of the the tests) and the 185W is for the whole system.

250W+125W+100W(an estimate for the rest of the system)=475W

So i'm good then? No need to find another one?

You're good, no need for a stronger PSU.
