I'm having problems with my brand new 280x toxic from Sapphire. Whenever I try to change the settings on a game, both of my screens will go black after I hit the 'apply' button. I also get black screens when I try to switch from the game to windows. For example, say I try to change my music during the game, normally I just click off and change my music, then click back on the minimized game and go back to playing. When I click off the game, both screens go black indefinitely until I restart my computer. Even trying to enable GPU scaling in Catalyst will cause a black screen when I hit 'apply'. Starting to lose hope. Is my card broken? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also forgot to mention that these black screens have been happening on both the newer 14.4 driver and on the 13.12 that I tried reverting to in order to solve the problem.

EDIT: Just to be clear on what I mean by black screen. The screen doesn't shut off. My monitors have power, it's just that the game seems to go black and I'm unable to CTRL-ALT-DEL or ALT-TAB to get back to windows. It's like it's frozen, except that I can usually still hear the game running in the background.

System specs:
AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 8-Core 3.6GHz
Sapphire R9 280x Toxic
2x4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 Motherboard
Corsair CX600 PSU

Pretty sure that tasking out of full screened DirectX games has never been officially supported, either by Microsoft or 3rd party software vendors.

Also, what is your display and what settings are you switching to? They could simply be incompatible.

I've always been able to switch out of games into other tasks with my last card, a Radeon HD 7770. And the display settings I change are usually just bumping the quality down a bit for more performance.
