I am going to build my first pc, and I am not sure if I should buy an evga gtx 780 ti or wait for Maxwell. How much of a performance difference will there be in Maxwell, and will it be worth the wait? I am quite excited for my first build, so I may not be able to wait until 2015, unless Maxwell will be a very big jump.

considering this http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-780-vs-GeForce-GTX-680 the current 7xx models are about 30-40% faster than the previous generation 6xx models, this trend is probably likely to continue with the 8xx models edging out the 7xx models by about 40% as well, however that is all speculation based on these results...the difference between 5xx and 6xx is also similar http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-680-vs-GeForce-GTX-580 so you can indeed expect a 30-40% increase in performance with the maxwell gpus, however as said before this is pure speculation based on previous generation cards. Now its upto you to decide how long you can wait for the maxwell gpu to come out to gain a 30-40% increase (possibly even more) in...

It depends on what resolution you plan on gaming on. If 1080p, the 780 Ti will be above and beyond what you would expect or need for 99.9% of games. However, I just recently tried out SLI 780 Tis at 1440p, and I was frankly disappointed in the fact that it could not handle the latest games with anything more than 2x-4x Anti-Aliasing due to running out of memory. I would wait for Maxwell with its potentially bigger bus size and memory before you get a card, or just get a cheaper solution that will give you the same performance, and just sell the old one. You could get a 780 or radeon 290 and get essentially the same performance for much cheaper.

I would really suggest a GTX 770, especially for your first rig. You won't be disappointed, and it can be had for around 300 bucks.

EDIT: This graph here has a similar situation with each card being about 30% faster than the previous one

same scenario here as well regarding real-world game performance (for bioshock infinite atleast)

880(ti).Reasons to wait and buy it:
-it will be on 20nm
-it will powerfull
-it will have humongonous improvements in the performance/watt sector(see the gtx750(ti) which still is on 28nm but has performance over r7 260x at almost half energy and doesnt needs pci-e connectors at all)
-it will be cheaper ( it its right. Release price will be lower than the one of 780(ti))
-as for the bus width even though its was rumored to be 512-bit it may be 256 ( from last sources)
Btw for the pomelo above me. At 1440p and 2160p you stop using AA filter at all.
770 is enough for 1440p(without any AA) and
780(ti) or titan(black) is enough for 2160 (without AA)
On most benchmarks youll see that at these resolutions they wont use AA anymore.
Also the case with gtx780ti SLI (this enters in the category :youre doing it wrong) . Those pair of cards where on same performance level as r9 295x2 and over titan z at 2160p.
Indeed there might be insuficient memory issues (see asus mars 2 the gtx760x2 which has 4gb of memory but they are divided meaning they have 2+2. Its one of the few cases in which 2+2=/4 with the card losing ground in very high res).
Wait and buy a 880(ty) and prepare to rock.
