I purchased a ASUS P6T SE to build a cheap hex core using a X5650. When I got the ASUS P6T SE I noticed that there were about six mildly bent pins. I did my best to re-align them and I thought I did a reasonable job. I did the build and then the mystery started. I noticed that only 2 gig of ram was being detected. After a lot of testing it turned out that ram slots 3,4,5 & 6 would work but never slots 1 & 2. After googling this type of issue a lot people said this can be caused by bent pins, so I thought this was probably the cause. I bit the bullet and purchased GA-X58A-UD3. Strangely the same thing is happening!! (socket is perfect condition) Ram slots 1 & 2 won't detected the ram... now I have left out that I also tried a E5503 cpu on both motherboards and same thing ram slots 1 & 2 won't detect the ram. Also I have tried three different types of ram...loosening the cooler and removing the back plate of the cooler...I'm stumped!

Run memtest on the ram.

What ram is it?

Check the manual for those motherboards. There are often limitations that prevent You from just sticking any DIMM in any socket. See if Your combinations are supported.

Ok, so the ram is 3 x 2 gig stix that are g.skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ. They are (according to the manual) in the correct positions of 1,3 & 5 (which is physically 2,4 & 6). Running memtest86 now... what I did notice though is that in windows is says 6 gig of ram!

So I've solved the issue - one dead stick of ram! The lesson here is to label each stick so you're sure which ones you have tested and which are the dead ones! Thanks for the help people!
